When Should You Grind a Stump?

Stump grinding is worth doing when a stump is a tripping hazard, blocking new landscaping or construction, sending up new sprouts, or attracting termites, ants, or other pests. We inspect the stump and surrounding root system and explain whether grinding or full root removal is the better long-term option before any work begins.

How Does the Stump Grinding Process Work?

After locating the stump and checking for nearby utility lines, irrigation, or septic systems, we grind the stump and surface roots down several inches below grade using a mechanical grinder. Wood chips are cleared away or left behind for mulch if you’d like, and the hole is backfilled so the area is level and ready for new grass, landscaping, or paving.

Will Grinding Stop the Stump From Sprouting?

Yes. Grinding the stump below grade removes the wood the tree would otherwise use to send up new sprouts. For species that are especially prone to root suckering, we can also treat the stump to help prevent regrowth for good.
